What is a Gummy Candy?

Gummy candy was invented in Germany by Haribo. Originally made from gum arabic, which is a natural gum made of the hardened sap of the acacia tree. The traditional gummy bear is made from a mixture of sugarglucose syrupstarchflavoringfood coloringcitric acid, and gelatin.

“Gummy candies descend from Turkish delight and even Japanese rice candy,” says candy historian Beth Kimmerle, author of Candy: A Sweet History. “But both of those are typically made with rice or corn starch versus gelatin.”

There are so many variations and flavors of gummies available – the traditional bear, worms, even road kill.  However, at Pillow Pets, our favorite is the GummiPup, the delicious scent of fruity gummy bears in a stuffed animal you can hug.
